When Richie Jackson finds an old man nearly dead in the snow, he drags him to the Half Moon pub at Skidby.
 

He’s not going to get home to North Burton in this weather. There'll be a bollocking from Nana.

Holed up the sleepy pub against the weather are some nasty folk. Nastier even than Nana.

If Richie is going get out alive, he'll have to play his cards right, literally.

Gaz drives a charcoal black 1982 Capri Lazer, and not because he's a poser. He used to bounce doors and he was good at it. That's why Ironwood, a debt collector from Leeds, has taken him on. 

​

Only, Gaz isn't that good at collecting. Like Our Dave says, he's better at looking after people than filling them in. He's met a girl from the library, Lucy.

 

He might be in love.

That might be the end of him.

The Great War is here. It's in the air and out on the North Sea as well.

The  trawlermen of H65, The Adamson, still need to catch fish even with a crew who don't know what they're doing. Skipper Williams must be seventy five, George Street has never to sea, Bobby Jackson from Lockington should be in jail, and the first mate, Raymond Low has got a gammy leg.

​

There's the freezing weather, and the bloody North Sea herself, and if that wasn't bad enough - there's a German U-boat on their tail.
